 +I am happy to announce the creation of the [[http://​​iDeal | iDeal group (Isotopologues in Diagenetic Environments And the Lithosphere)]]. The iDeal group is a focused group with a broad range of interests:
 +  - To study and understand paleo-fluid flow and carbonate cementation from sea-floor to subsurface
 +  - To study hydrothermal systems and high-temperature carbonate phases
 +  - To assess the potential use of clumped isotope as a tool to reconstruct the thermal history of basins
 +  - To assess the potential and limitations of clumped isotope applied to diagenesis: in particular, to what extent do pH, kinetic fraction, pressure, and diffusion affect clumped isotope data when applied to diagenesis.
 +  - Broadly speaking, to extend the application and calibration of clumped isotopes to a wider range of carbonate mineralogies and temperatures
 +The creation of the group is a direct result of our workshop in London last month, where it was decided that such a group would be useful. You can join the group by going to its dedicated home page and signing up (​ideal).
 +Once you are logged in, you have access to a dedicated forum to discuss any topics related to applying clumped isotopes to diagenetic or lithospheric problems, as well as a chat and a file sharing system.
 +Everyone is welcome to join, whether you currently work on diagenesis or not. The idea is to create a forum to exchange knowledge, to foster collaborations and to effectively coordinate calibration efforts between labs (i.e. different mineralogies,​ temperature ranges, etc...). We also would like to foster discussion between academics and industry representatives.

 +We wanted to let you know about a session that we are organizing for this year's AGU Fall Meeting: "​Between a cold outcrop and a hot place: Validation of clumped isotopes and other novel geochemical proxies to shallow crustal geothermometry"​. Please see the session details below. With this email we are specifically targeting folks within our growing community interested in higher temperature applications of clumped isotopes, and we encourage you all to consider submitting an abstract for a poster or talk. Also, please feel free to forward this email on to others who you think might be interested. Our goal with this session is in part to interact with other proxy communities,​ so we are hoping to draw interest from a variety of fields (e.g., thermochronology,​ organic geochemistry,​ etc).

 +The reconstruction and interpretation of temperatures in the geological past has historically focused on low-temperature systems (< 50°C) relevant to past climates, or high temperature systems (> 350°C) relevant to metamorphic and igneous processes. ​ Quantitative paleothermometers suitable for intermediate temperatures (50 – 350°C) have been elusive, particularly in settings lacking minerals suitable for fluid inclusions and thermochronology. ​ Temperatures between 50°C and 350°C are relevant to hydrocarbon maturation, mechanics of shallow faulting, genesis of hydrothermal ores, and diagenesis of chemical phases important for paleoclimatic reconstruction.
 +This session encourages the presentation of innovative techniques and new proxies that may provide quantitative constraints on surface to subsurface processes in the intermediate temperature range (50-350°C),​ for example, using clumped isotopes, triple oxygen isotopes, non-traditional stable isotopes, fluid inclusions, or organic geochemical proxies.

 +**The 3rd International Workshop on Clumped Isotopes on January 10-11, 2013 at Harvard University.**
 +The study of multiply-substituted isotopologues (or clumped isotopes) is a growing field within Earth sciences and geochemistry. ​ To date, most research has focused on either clumping in carbon dioxide or carbonate minerals with applications to atmospheric budgets, paleothermometry and diagenesis. But, there are also a series of new applications and discoveries.
 +As we meet for the 3rd International Workshop on Clumped Isotopes we expect to discuss the existing carbonate and CO2 clumped isotope work as well as clumping in O2, organic molecules and other systems. The workshop will provide a small forum (80 to 100 people) for scientists to share novel insights into clumped isotope systematics,​ discuss calibrations of the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer,​ present new results on applications to Earth sciences, and explore exciting new avenues of clumped isotope research. ​
